Description

Life and Work

In 1900, Elsie Smith came to Alberta after receiving her teacher certificate in Toronto.

A staunch Methodist, Elsie organized the Women's Missionary Society, which supported evangelical, educational and medical missions among new immigrants. She taught Sunday school as well.

After the death of her husband John in 1923, she taught for many more years. In her 70s she taught in a remote school district where she had to go by horse and stone boat to teach school. She was one of the first teachers to retire with a pension.

Elsie Smith will be remembered for her dedication to her teaching, to her church and to those in need of pensions.
