Christina (Mackay) Scarlett

Innisfail

Description

Life and Work

Each Friday, Ina Scarlett served tea at the Innisfail extended care unit. She made her famous scones for the Presbyterian Ladies Aid Teas at the Innisfail Historical Village and wedding cakes for her children and grandchildren.

She picked up mail for people, drove them to appointments and kept an eye on her friends and neighbours in frail health. Each year she prepared Christmas dinner for her family, including 24 grandchildren. She curled with her three oldest sons and was an active curler until the age of 91.

Ina Scarlett was 92 years of age. She came to the Innisfail area with her parents in 1912. She married Tom Scarlett and farmed in the Little Red Deer District raising seven boys and one girl. Until the age of 65, Ina worked in the Innisfail hospital's dietary unit.

In 1995, the Innisfail and District Chamber of Commerce named Ina Scarlett its Citizen of the Year.
