Caroline Mary (Mair) Glass Day

Lacombe

Description

Life and Work

Caroline Mary (Mair) Glass Day came from Lanark, Ontario with her husband and daughter in 1892 to settle in the Lacombe area.

When her husband Andrew Glass died suddenly the next year, Caroline started Glass General Store next to the first post office to support herself and her family. Her brother-in-law helped her until he too died after a short illness. Her grandmother Mrs. John Mair came from Lanark to help and together they ran the store until 1900 when Caroline married Mr. H. Alfred Day.

Caroline’s piano, a rarity in pioneer days, brought with her from Lanark, was often the evening gathering place for friends and neighbours.
