Danish Canadian National Museum

The Danish Canadian National Museum is located south (700 metres) of the Central Alberta community of Dickson. It invites you to explore the rich history of Danish immigrants in Canada—a saga that began over 1000 years ago in L’Anse aux Meadows and follows three waves of immigration through to the modern day.

The museum is situated on 14 acres of land featuring walking paths, flower gardens, a pond with our own Mermaid, a replica Viking Ship—the Freydis Joanna housed in a Naust (Viking boat house), a Jelling (rune) Stone, the Dagmar Pioneer Church, the Thomsen Cabin, Nielsen CPR House, and the Verbena Dormitory.  A former Girls' Dormitory built in 1933 to house girls attending the Dickson High School, the Dormitory building houses the main museum and archives. The gift shop features items with a Danish flare including imported foods. The Saga Café serves traditional Danish open-faced sandwiches, pastries and desserts, and coffee—the best espresso based coffee beverages in the area.

We invite visitors to wander the beautiful grounds, enjoy lunch or a beverage (we are fully licensed) in the café or on the deck overlooking the serene pond. Interpretive tours are available.

The picturesque grounds are a beautiful backdrop for your special event. It is the perfect venue for weddings and family reunions. The Dagmar Church is consecrated and can seat 24 for intimate celebrations or book our event tents for larger celebrations.

Watch our website and Facebook page for information on our seasonal special events. We annually host celebrations for Summer Solstice/St. Hans, Æbleskiver & Jam Day-July 1, and Viking Days the third weekend in August. This features the largest annual gathering of Viking re-enactors in North America.
